Round 5: Fubon Braves keep a leadership position

The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Fubon Braves as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Fubon Braves defeated 6th ranked Formosa D. at home 83-76. Fubon Braves made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Formosa D. turnovers and outrebounded them 51-38 including a 21-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Costa Rican-Belizean forward Charles Garcia (208-88, college: Seattle) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 21 rebounds. American guard OJ Mayo (193-87, college: USC) chipped in 26 points and 9 rebounds. Fubon Braves' coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Jerran Young (198-91, college: Wright St.) produced a double-double by scoring 25 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the guests. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Formosa D. at the other side dropped to the eighth place with five games lost. Formosa D. will play next round against Zhuhai trying to get back on the winning streak. Fubon Braves will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Macau on the road.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Filipino Alab Pilipinas (4-2) against seventh ranked Chinese Zhuhai (3-4) on Sunday night. Host Alab Pilipinas were defeated by Zhuhai in a tough game in Manila 93-98. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Alab Pilipinas. The game was dominated by American players. Guard Douglas Herring-Jr (191-87, college: Utica) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 assists. Julian Boyd contributed with 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Forward Nick King (201-95, college: MTSU) answered with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 12 rebounds and 4 assists for Alab Pilipinas. Zhuhai have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Macau. Defending Filipino champion Alab Pilipinas keep the third position with two games lost. Zhuhai will play against Formosa D. (#8) in Changhua City in the next round. Alab Pilipinas will play against the league's leader Fubon Braves (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Despite that victory Mono Vampire went down to second position due to points difference. Loser Saigon Heat still closes the standings with two games lost. Mono Vampire will meet Macau (#5) on the road in the next round. Saigon Heat will play against Singapore Slingers (#7) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Strangely Singapore Slingers outrebounded Fubon Braves 48-32 including a 18-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Guard Marcus Elliott (191-84, college: Louisiana Tech) came up with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and center Anthony McClain (211-88, college: Cincinnati) added 17 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Singapore Slingers in the defeat.
